Speech contest Information

* All Speeches are due  1/6/14 
* Students must have two copies of their typed speech
* The speech must be 3 minutes to 5 minutes long 
* A 3 minute speech is about 2 1/2 pages typed. 
* this is a major project in the second marking period if all parts are not met students can not pass. 

1. Speeches MUST BE at minimum 3 minutes long (-20 if it is not)   
2. Speeches MUST BE memorized ( - 20 if that is not) 
3. 40 points for delivery and presentation This includes voice, pronunciation, enunciation, gestures           and poise.  STUDENTS should activity present their speech a lesson will be given during class to  
       guide them in developing a strong speech,and presentation.
4. Speech content must be the student's thoughts and words on the topic.

Students will be presenting speeches to the class. Dates of presentations will be given on 1/6. To ensure that your child is ready to present please practice with them.

Students are asked to consider how maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important for individuals, communities or even the nation as a whole. Participants can choose to focus on various aspects of health - including, but not limited to, exercise, nutrition, obesity, disease prevention or mental health.

In organizing their speeches, students can consider these questions:
  • What is the student's definition of a healthy lifestyle?
  • How does an individual's decision to maintain a healthy lifestyle impact his/her own life and those around him/her?
  • What can communities do to assist individuals in improving their health? (Consider examples of community or government initiatives that have had a positive impact on overall health.)
Students can use the questions above to help formulate ideas, but they should not be limited by the list.
Speeches must be at least three minutes and no longer than five minutes long, and must be in the students' own words.
Judging criteria
Contestants will be judged using the following 100-point system:
40 points for material organization This accounts for theme and subject adherence, structure, content, logic and color.

40 points for delivery and presentation
This includes voice, pronunciation, enunciation, gestures and poise.

20 points for overall effectiveness
This scores impression and effect.

Writing an Argument
Students will type a 2 page paper.  Students must research chosen topic and answer the question:
How did rural setting affect your topic?
Choose one (1) of the three (3) topics
1.  The Homestead Act
2. Yellow Fever
3. Life on the Oregon Trail  
Step one:  Research topic
Step two:  identify what is the importance of your choice though the history of America.
Step three: Develop a reason to why a rural setting had such a strong effect on your topic choice.
Essay format:
Introduction: Introduce your topic; what were the years throughout history was it most prevalent, how many people were effect by it, and what its importance through history.
Body of your essay:  This is when you are developing your argument. How did rural setting play into the topic you have chosen. You can bring in what was happening in urban areas during this time to compare how it affected both areas, but you main focus is to explain how rural areas were affected.
Through your research you must cite evidence that supports your ideas.  Do not forget to cite throughout the paper so that you do not plagiarize mistakenly.
Conclusion of the essay: This is the time to tie up any loose ends. Remember do not add any new information.

A Bibliography must be attached to the end of the paper.

* There has to be illustrations (original work, or used from images found)
* This is a Children’s book so remember it must be creative, something a kindergartner would like to read.
This is a chance for you to be creative and,  show what you have learned about you person how has shown perseverance.

REPORT GUIDELINES/REMINDERS

1The title page, written report, and bibliography should be typed or written very neatly.
 Within your report you must have a section that indicates the explorer's religion and how it played a role in their exploration.
2 type your report, please Times New Roman. size 12 

3 Both the illustration of the flag and route map must be colored using crayons or colored pencils (no markers). A blank map and flag template will be provided. On the map, shade in the background – don’t leave any part of the page white (unless it’s supposed to be white).

4 On the route map, the continents and oceans should be labeled with a black, thin Sharpie (Extra Fine Point).

5 You must use at least two sources to find information for your report.

6 On your bibliography, all of your sources must be listed together in alphabetical order by the first letter in the source. Do not list books first, then Internet articles, etc. Be sure to skip a line between sources.

Directions: Read and analyze each sentence.  Circle the predicates and underline the subjects.  Draw a line separating the clauses in the sentence, count them, and write the amount of clauses on the line.


Subject: a noun or pronoun that takes the predicate. 
Predicate: an action or state of being (verb).
Clause: a subject and a predicate working together.
