Weekly Vocabulary

logic: An organized use of evidence, facts, and examples to support an argument or thesis.

organizational patterns: The pattern in which the writer chooses to organize his writing.  Examples:  spatial, order of importance, chronological order, comparison-and-contrast, cause-and-effect, problem-and-solution.

bias: An inclination for or against that inhibits impartial judgment; one-sidedness, partiality, partisanship, prejudice.

bibliography: A list of all the resources (articles, books, encyclopedias) consulted during the research of a paper or report.

outline: Arranging main ideas and supporting details in a logical order.  Uses Roman numerals for the main ideas, and capital letters and Arabic numerals for the supporting ideas.

Reminder to parents

1.  If homework is not handed in the day it is due it cannot be made up and the   students is given detention.

2.       Tests are not to be taken in pencil. If a student wants to use pencil to do homework, and take class notes that is acceptable.

3.       When children are given a research paper, if they copy and paste their work from a web site they will receive a 0 for their paper. Plagiarism is not acceptable.

4.       If a student wants extra help, I am always willing to help. They must take it upon themselves to come to me and ask.

5.       It is the students’ job to copy down their homework and test. Students are never given TEST without ample time to study. If they do not write it down when they are told about it, it is their own fault.

6.       If a student is absent the day before a test that does not excuse them from the test. 

7. If students are absent the day a project is due it is to be handed in the day they return to school.

8. All books must be covered. If  books are not covered the student will have detention.

Weekly Vocabulary

paraphrase: A restatement in one’s own words that stays true to the ideas, tone, and general length of the original passage.

point of view: Vantage point from which a writer presents information, which may include the writer’s biases and stereotypical beliefs.

figurative language: Writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally and is used to state ideas in vivid and imaginative ways.  Examples:  metaphor, personification, simile.

tone:The writer’s attitude toward his/her subject or audience.  If the writer’s purpose is to inform, the tone is usually serious, calm, and reasonable.

transition: A connecting word or phrase that clarifies relationship between details, sentences, or paragraphs.
